Canon Overview
In the series, Sophie Foster is a 12 year-old-genius with a secret: she can, for some inexplicable reason, read minds, and can't turn it off. Her life is turned upside down when a boy named Fitz shows up. He claims to be an elf, and tells Sophie that she too is an elf, with the Ability of a Telepath. Due to this newfound revelation, along with the revelation that a secret organization called the Black Swan hid her in the human world, Sophie is whisked away from the human world and forced to acclimate to the elven world instead, where she is supposed to belong. As she learns more about her new world and forms relationships with others, another organization, the Neverseen, is plotting in the shadows.

Fics in the fandom often cross over with Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Harry Potter. As of August 2024, there are roughly 2,500 fics on AO3 and roughly 1,000 fics on Fanfiction.net. Most community activity and interaction occurs on Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, Reddit, and the Keeper of the Lost Cities Wiki, as well as Wattpad, Pinterest, Quotev, and TikTok
Shipping
There are a mix of F/M, M/M, and F/F ships in the fandom. As of August 2024, the most popular ship on AO3 is the het ship Sophie/Keefe. Other popular ships include Sophie/Fitz, Keefe/Tam, Sophie/Biana, Marella/Linh and Dex/Fitz.
Shipping Controversy
Sophie/Fitz used to be more popular than Sophie/Keefe, due to Sophie's canonical crush on Fitz and the progression of their relationship. However, in the later books, as Sophie and Keefe's relationship developed further, fans began to shift from shipping Sophie/Fitz to shipping Sophie/Keefe instead. This shift has seen some controversy in the fandom. Many fans have criticized Fitz,[1] while other fans have defended him and his actions.[2]
There is also a significant part of the fandom that are critical of Sophie's own actions in handling the love triangle. Some fans believe that Sophie either cheated on Fitz with Keefe or committed actions that were disrespectful to her relationship with Fitz. [3] [4] Opinions are mixed on the subject.
Platform Conflict
There have, at times, been conflict between the different sections of the fandom that occupy different platforms. For example, the Tumblr fandom is notably more pro-Fitz Vacker and more welcoming to Fitz fans than other platforms. It also, especially prior to an influx of fans in 2024, tends to be older and more leftist. This resulted in one especially notable conflict between the Instagram and Tumblr fandoms in 2022, where the Instagram fandom became upset over a "stripper" outfit that Keepblr had created as a joke about what the adult Neverseen members wore under their cloaks. Many Instagram fans viewed it as inappropriate to make these jokes about a series targeted to children. The conflict was perpetuated by fans screenshotting content from each platform and reposting it to complain. An anonymous confession account on Instagram became a key player in the conflict, with Instagram fans sending confessions to it complaining about the "wokeness" of the Tumblr fandom.[5]
