Anke Eissmann is a fan artist and fanfic author particularly known in the Tolkien fandom, where she has been active across The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and other Ardaverse works since the early 1990s. Since 2010, she has also been active in Sherlock fandom. Her works are published on her personal website and Tumblr, and some have also appeared in fanzines and calendars.
Tolkien
Eissmann works mainly in watercolours in the Tolkien fandom, she writes that she uses it for illustrations due to its subtlety, its painterly quality and unpredictability, which enable the illustrator to suggest rather than dictate, and thus leave room for the reader's imagination.[1] She has also created some pen-and-ink works and pencil drawings. She states her inspirations as including the Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau movements, Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee, as well as Ivan Bilibin, Edmond Dulac, Edward Hopper, Arthur Rackham and Jan Vermeer.[1]
She illustrates scenes from book canon and sometimes from fanfiction; her Tolkien portrayals are not based on the Peter Jackson films. She uses early medieval historical references for costumes, weapons and architecture. She aims for realism, and states that she attempts to avoid clichés of fantasy art.[1]
Some of her best-known works feature Faramir and Éowyn, with her 2004 work "And so they stood on the walls ..." featuring in many icons.
Sherlock
Sherlock Fanart
Much of the enormous body of her Sherlock work is pencil sketches and drawings, but she has also created numerous pen-and-ink drawings and watercolors. Her human figures are often austere, but the mood of her art ranges from tragic to playful.
