Jonathan "JoJo" Joestar (ジョナサン・ジョースター Jonasan Jōsutā) is the main protagonist of the first Part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Phantom Blood, and the first JoJo of the series. He is the direct ancestor of all the JoJo protagonists in Parts 2 through 6.
Background
Jonathan is the son of the wealthy businessman George Joestar I and Mary Joestar. He is an honest, kind, and positive man whose life is fraught with tragedy after meeting his adopted older brother - and series antagonist - Dio Brando. In his battle against Dio, Jonathan becomes a Ripple user under the tutelage of his master Will Anthonio Zeppeli.[1]

Reception and popularity
While not outright disliked, Jonathan is one of the least popular JoJos. Compared to the other JoJo protagonists, he is often seen by fans as "boring". Whereas most of his descendants are quirky and often amusingly wacky, Jonathan is defined by his righteousness and gentlemanly personality. Whereas his descendants have typically showcased their fighting prowess against various opponents before confronting their ultimate enemy, some readers were disappointed that Jonathan was often thwarted by the craftier Dio Brando from the very beginning. Additionally, he is the only JoJo who did not possess a known Stand within his lifetime (however one alternate story gives him the stand The Passion).
Fanon and tropes
As a less popular JoJo, Jonathan tends to appear as a supporting character rather than a leading character in fan works. In fluffy Everybody Lives AUs, he is often depicted being overjoyed to meet his descendants, who likewise love their sweet-natured ancestor. Alternatively, the straight-laced Jonathan may be hilariously taken aback by their less-than-seemly behaviors, excepting the similarly wholesome Kujo Holy.
A very popular fan theory posits that Kujo Jotaro's Star Platinum is Jonathan's reincarnation, returned to the living world to settle business with DIO once and for all.
Shipping
According to the volume of fan work on Archive of Our Own (AO3), Jonathan Joestar x Dio Brando is Jonathan's most popular romantic ship.
