Kujo Jotaro (Japanese: 空条 承太郎, Hepburn: Kūjō Jōtarō, note: the family name is Kujo) is the main protagonist of the third part of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, Stardust Crusaders, and the third JoJo of the series. He also appears as a major ally in Diamond is Unbreakable and Stone Ocean, and plays a minor role in Vento Aureo. Jotaro is the most recurring JoJo protagonist of the series,[1] alongside his grandfather, Joseph Joestar.

Background

Jotaro is a Japanese delinquent (番長 Banchō) with Japanese roots from his father's side, and half-British half-Italian roots from his mother's side. Jotaro lives an ordinary life until the Joestar Family's old nemesis, DIO, returns. After seeing his mother Holy fall ill due to DIO's reawakening, Jotaro embarks on a journey across the world alongside his grandfather, Joseph Joestar, and a group of friends in order to save his mother and defeat the Vampire once and for all.

Wielding the all-powerful Star Platinum, Jotaro is the first JoJo introduced with a Stand, and is among the most well-known characters of the series. He is the ex-husband of an American woman and father of Jolyne Cujoh, the protagonist of Stone Ocean.[2]

Reception and popularity

Jotaro is one of the most well-known Jojo characters due to his presence in multiple parts and the lead in the first part with stands. He and Stardust Crusaders are what comes to mind for many when thinking of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Western audiences are familiar with him due to the Capcom adaptation of the third part, along with the OVA adaptation.

As of 30 May 2018, Jotaro is the most frequently appearing characters among JJBA works on FanFiction.Net (FFN).[3] As of 15 June 2021, he is the most frequently tagged character among JJBA works on Archive of Our Own (AO3), with over 10.4 thousand works.[4]

In online spaces like Twitter, the dolphin (💎) or star (⭐) emojis are often used by fans to represent Jotaro.

Some of Jotaro's most popular canonical tags on AO3 include Kujo Jotaro Has Feelings (over 500 works) and Kujo Jotaro Is Bad at Feelings (over 450 works).

Jotaro is nicknamed as "3taro", "4taro", "5taro", or "6taro", depending on whether his appearance is from Stardust Crusaders (Part 3), Diamond Is Unbreakable (Part 4), Vento Aureo (Part 5), or Stone Ocean (Part 6).

Shipping

In fan works, Jotaro's most frequent love interest is Kakyoin Noriaki, one of the only characters close to his own age.[5] His most popular gen relationship is likely his parent-child relationship with his daughter, Jolyne Cujoh. He is also shipped with other characters, including Rohan Kishibe, Dio Brando, Jean Pierre Polnareff, Mohammed Avdol, Narcisco Anasui, Weather Report, and himself from other parts.
