Mohammed Avdol is a major character in the third part of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Stardust Crusaders.
Background
Avdol was born in the late 1960s in Cairo, Egypt. He's had his stand, Magician's Red, since birth.
In 1983, he befriends Joseph Joestar, who warns him about DIO. Before the events of part 3, DIO attempted to seduce Avdol but failed due to Joseph's warnings.
Avdol's tarot card is the Magician, being the first card in the tarot deck and symbolizing new beginnings and deceit.
His name is a reference to Paula Abdul.
Reception and Popularity
Avdol is the least popular of the Stardust Crusaders, due to several factors. One of these is the lack of screentime compared to the Jojos, another being racial bias (Avdol is Black Egyptian, compared to the predominantly white and Japanese cast of Jojo's). As of 2023, Avdol is the only human Stardust Crusader to not receive an official Nendoroid.
However, there are still fans of him, but smaller compared to other prominent JoJo allies (Weather Report, Rohan Kishibe, Noriaki Kakyoin, and Speedwagon).
Fandom
Many Jojo fans headcanon Mohammed Avdol as Muslim or grew up under Islam, due to Egypt's predominant Islamic culture. It is also common to headcanon him as gay, due to being the only Crusader to not have a canonical favorite type of woman. In canon, Avdol's relationships with women are platonic, including his apathy to Joseph pointing out Mariah's legs. Avdol's relationships with men, notably Joseph Joestar and Jean-Pierre Polnareff, are intimate friendships involving sacrifice and battling together with stands.
