IwaOi, or Iwaizumi Hajime/Oikawa Tooru, is a popular slash ship in the fandom Haikyuu.

Canon

Oikawa and Iwaizumi are childhood friends. They have played on the same volleyball team from childhood through high school[1]. Oikawa is the captain of Aoba Johsai's volleyball team and is widely regarded as the ace setter. Iwaizumi is the volleyball team's ace, vice captain and a wing spiker. It is noted that the two almost work in syncronization on court.

Together with Matsukawa Issei and Hanamaki Takahiro, they make up the Aoba Johsai third years in the volleyball team, most commonly known as the "Seijou Third Years."

The two have a close and playful relationship. Oikawa always calls Iwaizumu "Iwa-chan," and Iwaizumi sometimes calls him "Shittykawa, Trashykawa, Dumbass," etc. in return. Oikawa often provokes Iwaizumi by making fun of him, to which Iwaizumi retaliates with threats and violence. Despite their banter, Iwaizumi often acts Oikawa's pillar, providing Oikawa with guidance in his times of need.

In their last match against Karasuno before graduation, Oikawa's last toss was to Iwaizumi. When Iwaizumi despairs over his inability post-game, Oikawa is the first to offer him silent support with a clap on the back[2].

'The fight isn't over,' an extra chapter in the Haikyuu!! manga[3], is an important chapter for IwaOi fans. In the chapter, Iwaizumi tells Oikawa that he is proud to have him as a partner even if their teams may change in the future. The two promise not to hold back if they ever fight against each other. After the time skip in the Haikyuu!! Manga, they fulfill the promise during the 2021 Olympics, in which Iwaizumi is the sports trainer for the Japanese national volleyball team while Oikawa is the starting setter of the Argentina national team[4].

Fandom

Iwaoi is in one of the most popular ships in Haikyuu. As of 2019, there are over 8600 works on AO3, and is the most tagged ship, a position previously held by Kagehina. As of 2024, the number of works tagged on AO3 exceeds 20,000.

Common Tropes & Fanon

  • Future Fic: College era works are popular in the HQ fandom. Before the publication of post-timeskip manga chapters, it is implied that they would go separate ways after high school, which may lead to angst. Many college era works depict them ending up in different universities. After their career choices are revealed post-timeskip, works that portray them dealing with their respective careers become more prevalent.
  • Childhood Friends/Friends to Lovers: The two have been best friends since childhood.
  • Pining: Related to the Friends to Lovers trope. Either or both of them have romantic feelings that they believe are unrequited or a threat to their friendship.
  • Long-Distance Relationship: After the career reveal for the two appears in the manga, fanon portrayal of the two entering a long-distance relationship post-time skip becomes more common, with Iwaizumi working as an athletic trainer in either Japan or the USA and Oikawa working as a professional volleyball player in Argentina.
