Fan goodboydummy posted four images on their Tumblr account in August 2012 to visually define The Different Types of Fanfiction as compared to the fandom's canon plot. "I probably left a few out, but these are the most common," they said.[1]

The definitions include: Extension; Addition; Alteration; Alternate Universe; Crack Fic; Different POV; and Drabbles.

A few years later (c.2015), yougothenigo added similar definitions for Smut and There, I fixed it for you.[2]

Fan response

As of 26 March 2021, there are over 395,000 notes on Tumblr, indicating that these definitions hit the nail on the head and the funnybone, too.
