Anthony "Tony" DiNozzo is a popular main character on NCIS for thirteen seasons. He has also made guest appearances on the spin-offs NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans.

In Season 9, an Alternate Universe was revealed where Kate Todd had never been killed by Ari thanks to Gibbs; thus Kate and Tony were married, and had a newborn baby girl, named Kelly.

Season 13 was DiNozzo's last season, Tony leaves after finding out he has a daughter with former Special Agent Ziva David, who died in a mortar attack on her home in Israel. He leaves NCIS to "look for some answers" and to care for their daughter.

Common Fanfic Tropes

• Hurt/Comfort is a very popular trope in Tony fics, especially ones centered around past child abuse or neglect.
• DiNozzo Family, in particular with DiNozzo Senior making an appearance. Due to the fact that early NCIS canon painted Tony's father in a rather unflattering light, bordering in places on abusive, DiNozzo Senior is often painted as a villain (past or present), with Tony's mother sometime portrayed as neglectful.
• Tony leaves NCIS. Due to canon treating Tony rather harshly, some Tony fans like to write fics where Tony leaves NCIS. A very popular variation on this trope is Tony joining the FBI, which often includes crossover Tony pairing with characters who are already FBI agents (Criminal Minds or Numb3rs characters in particular).
  • This is canonized in Season 13, when Tony leaves NCIS.
• How Tony got his job was a very popular trope in the early NCIS fandom after Tony said in the show that he got his job at NCIS by smiling.
