David McDonnell (??? - 21 July 2009)[1] was an Australian Star Trek and science fiction fan who was active in Melbourne fandom between the late 1970s and the 1980s. He was a trans man whose 'dead name' appears on many of the science fiction documents from the time, and this name can be found on fanlore for the purposes of historical verisimilitude.
David was an early member of Austrek and he became contributor to its newsletter Captain's Log and fanzine Spock - not only as writer, but also as editor. He was a participant or committee member in Austrek and Trekcons 1 and 2 in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His related interests included D&D, literary and media SF conventions, and filking.
Sue Bursztynski recalled some of David's enthusiastic filking in front of George Takei at a convention room party:
(David) had written some risque filk songs - my favourite to "Advance Australia Fair", which began "Trekkers of the world rejoice, Spock's in pon farr again, The only question that remains is who and where and when..." . Another one went to the tune of "Donald Where's Your Troosers?" ("Scotty where's your troosers?"). But the cheekiest one went to the tune of "The Quartermaster's store". I wish I'd had a camera to record (his) red face when we got to the Sulu verse of the song and (David) refused to sing it for George![1]
David withdrew from Austrek towards the end of 1982, but he maintained contact with friends in D&D and other fandoms. He fully transitioned shortly after that time, and appeared at the occasional convention, fandom reunion, or other event over subsequent years.
After David passed away, his Viking funeral was attended by many of his fandom friends.
