Some Excerpts
Actually, I'd say that fanfic moved me to write fanfic. There are a lot of shows I've liked and watched religiously, but none of them have followings with the intelligence, humor, and genuine emotion as The X-Files. I found a community of writers that I really wanted to be a part of.
I'm not sure they're the same. Scully is the reason I watch the show with my nose to the TV, and the character I focus on in writing, but I find Mulder POV easier. Maybe it's because I know lots of scientists (who are very unScully), and very few conspiracy theorists, but he's got a more consistent, believable rhythm. If I'm like anybody on the show, it's probably Byers -- especially when he's in casual dress.
Every time I decide there's a genre I don't like, someone brilliant comes along and kills my precious theory. So I enjoy authors who depart from the norm, either stylistically or thematically. In the past bunch of months, I've loved work by cofax, haphazard method, Jean Robinson, JET, Jill Selby, Jintian Li, Kipler, marasmus, Maria Nicole, Nascent, Penumbra, Plausable Deniability, Rachel Anton and Vehemently. Yes, those are in alphabetical order, and no, my CDs aren't. Oh, and yes, I still need to send some feedback to a few of those.
I'd just finished reading "Iolokus" for the second time, trying to decide whether the professional-quality writing was a sign that fanfic had enormous potential, or whether I could never write like that and shouldn't bother. I decided I probably couldn't write like that, but I had an hour to kill before a flight, so why not? I scribbled the first few pages of "Thank You, Drive Around" and was so engaged in the process I missed final boarding call. I figured _that_ was a sign, although of what, I'm not sure.
