Catra is a character in the toyline and animated television series, She-Ra: Princess of Power and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which are part of the Masters of the Universe franchise.

She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985)

Initially, when the Princess of Power line was devised, Catra was She-Ra's main nemesis. However, when the Filmation series came along, the Horde (from the Masters of the Universe toyline) were merged into being the main villains in the series, and Catra became one of Hordak's minions. Nevertheless, the animated version of Catra demonstrated that she only served Hordak in order to accrue more power and authority for herself.[1]

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)

Catra is a member of the The Horde and grew up with Adora. The two shared a close bond and when Adora abandoned the Horde and joined the Rebellion, Catra felt a deep betrayal. However, Catra soon comes to realize that Adora's defection is a boon for her, allowing Catra to step out of Adora's shadow and climb the ranks. She soon takes Adora's rank of Force Captain and finds that Lord Hordak comes to favour her contributions to the Horde.[2]

Common Pairings

Princesses of Power Fandom

Catra is incredibly popular within the fandom, despite or because of her descent into villainy throughout the series. She is the subject of much analysis due to her key role in the story and her relationship to Adora. The possibility of her being redeemed and joining Adora to fight alongside the rebellion was one of the most hot debated topics while the series aired.

Catra's origin's are another source of constant speculation for fans. Early theories believed that she might be a princess, as a figure with pointed ears and a tail is seen among princess's Light Hope reveals are needed to balance the planet. This often tied into another theory that Catra was a Magicat, a species of feline humanoids that existed in the original She-Ra series and who Catra had stolen her mask from.

Fans also debate if Catra has skin or fur, and whether she should be considered a furry or not. This became a more widely spread topic after several of the crew who worked on the show made arguments for and against it, much to the delight and distress of fans watching.[3] It is often brought up to jokingly torment fans of Catra who do not want to be labelled as a furry for liking her.

Full Name

Rae Geiger once joked that Catra's middle name was 'Applesauce, and Noelle Stevenson once joked her surname was 'Meowmeow'.[4] Many fans have taken this on board, both ironically and unironically. Some headcanon that these names were given to Catra by Adora when they were youngsters.

Catradora, the pairing between Catra and Adora, is the juggernaut ship of the She-Ra fandom. Catra is also sometimes paired with Scorpia or together with both Adora and Glimmer.
