Right now there are only subcategories by fandom. Would it be helpful to have different subcategories of characters? Like female charactes, male characters, trans characters, characters of color, etc? People interested in a specific kind of character would have an easier time finding information about activities, fandoms, etc. involving these characters. --Doro (talk) 15:21, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- My hesitation with subcategories, like female characters, etc, it that not every character fits neatly in a category, especially in the Sci-fi/Fantasy fandoms when you can have characters that are essentially sexless, or characters that are not as easily defined by race as they would be non-human. I'm not completely against the idea, but I think we need to consider how we are going to deal with these issues before we go ahead -- Kingstoken (talk) 15:41, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- I would hesitate putting literary characters (from any genre) into race categories, as sometimes race is intentionally ambiguous in the source material. I'm thinking of the very popular Black Hermione and Bi-racial Harry Potter tropes, whether or not it was intentional on JKs part to not disclose their ethnicity. And before that there was a push for more diverse fanart in Good Omens, where the source material did not describe the main characters as white, but the majority of art featured white representations. Although both of those books were adapted with white leads, that is just one interpretation, and I wouldn't want us to discredit equally valid interpretations based on the original source material. --Auntags (talk) 23:38, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
