Breaking Away is an alt uber novel by Tonya Muir. The book consists of two stories, With Faltering Steps and Making Strides.

Like a great number of Xena/Gabrielle XWP stories, the originally published online versions have several disclaimers but no summary. General Disclaimer of Making Strides: "This is an uber story, the characters are similar to our bard and warrior and have reflections of them. Their world is a combination of darkness and light with a good dose of neediness, growth, and some detective work."

Reviews

"With the the world of horse breeding as a background, WITH FALTERING STEPS begins with Mafia henchwoman Lacey Montgomery visiting a horsetrack to look into the reason why her boss's horses are not performing well as of late. She finds much more than she bargained for in the form of a spirited little rider named Rachel Wilson who suspects foul play herself and who immediately volunteers to help. [...] Set about a year after the initial meeting between Mafia henchwoman Lacey Montgomery and horse trainer Rachel Wilson, MAKING STRIDES begins with the two settled down in domestic tranquility, making a life now with each other and Rachel's charming nine year-old Molly. [...] Lacey and Rachel find themselves dealing with a much greater concern - the knowledge that someone from Lacey's dark past wants the ex-henchwoman - and to get to her they are more than willing to go through friends...and family. With no weak points whatsoever, this sequel's strengths are so many I could go on for several pages."[1]
"This past year Tonya Muir proved to be among those very rare, very gifted bards who with her first story THE JOURNEY HOME immediately shot into this fandom's list of top writing talents. She has easily solidified that position by continuing to deliver first-class stories. Now with this sequel to her uber tale WITH FALTERING STEPS Tonya brings us what is probably her finest writing accomplishment to date - a novel which to put it simply folks - is a fanfic masterpiece."[2]
"This is definitely a deal because you get two books under one cover. I read a lot of lesbian literature and this ranks as one of the better ones produced in recent years. It features another Xena couple, tall, dark and brooding and small, blonde and talkative, but the story is told so well, that it's not as distracting as in some of the books. Lacey is the right hand "man" to a Mafia type boss and meets Rachel, who has a dark past herself. The two books tell how they try to build a life together, solve mysteries and separate themselves from Lacey's criminal background. The second book is actually the better one as far as plot and story development."[3]
