Some Excerpts
I've been in online fandom since Highlander was the really big thing, and since then I've been many, many places. I did a solid run through Sentinel fandom, which was where I did the bulk of my writing before Supernatural yanked me in. I spent a couple of years in popslash writing about NSYNC (ai!) and then for a long time it was mostly Stargate (SG1 and Atlantis) and one-offs (NCIS, Merlin, Vorkosigan saga, Due South, White Collar, and some random Yuletide fandoms) for me before I landed here. I've only been in Supernatural for about five years, but the AO3 tells me I've written more about Sam and Dean Winchester than any other pairing. I fell pretty hard. :) Here, I'm mostly into Sam/Dean slash, with a side of J2 here and there, but I also dabble a lot in the gen side of fandom.
First, it's always easiest for me to get into a fandom my friends are also into, and a lot of people I'm close to were getting into SPN at the same time I was. Most of them moved on to other fandoms in like, point-five seconds, though, because they are lacking in strength of character and commitment.I think what keeps me here is that Supernatural hits just about all my buttons. I'm a big horror fan and always have been, so I really enjoy the monsters and the cold opens. I'm a big genre fan in general, so I love the underlying weird and the possibilities built into the premise. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are scary hot - having two stars so easy on the eyes is a definite draw. :)
But I'm also just fascinated by the relationship between Sam and Dean, and the way it's evolved over time. There's so much push in it, and the push is always overwhelmed by the pull. I love the way they trade guilt and blame back and forth and yet never let it eclipse this bone-deep love for each other. I love that their relationship is explicitly, canonically stronger than any normal sibling relationship can account for. I love that their bond is so strong it troubles Heaven and thwarts Hell. And I love that while all this is going on, they still tease each other about girls and play rock-paper-scissors and smile and laugh together and just generally like being together. Like, the fact that after fourth and fifth season, they still just really like each other! That is awesome! I adore that.
So I guess it's a lot of things, but to nail it down, I'd say the strength of the relationship and the breadth of the universe appeal to me the most. Supernatural's writers have their flaws, but world-building and relationship-building are not, in my opinion, among them.
Boys! I love them. And now you've made me want to write something. :)
