Alcatraz was an American Fox science fiction thriller-drama television series and was canceled after thirteen episodes.
Canon
Switching between eras, the series focuses on the Alcatraz prison, which was shut down in 1963 due to unsafe conditions for its prisoners and guards. The show's premise is that both the prisoners and the guards disappeared in 1963 and have abruptly reappeared in modern-day San Francisco, where they are being tracked down by a government agency.[1]
Main Characters:
- Rebecca Madsen - a SFPD homicide detective with family ties to Alcatraz; she becomes involved after one of the inmates is responsible for the death of her partner and directly meeting the task force.
- Dr. Diego "Doc" Soto - a PhD in both Criminal Justice and Civil War History, author of books on Alcatraz, comic book writer/artist/store owner. Although he lacks field training, Doc's detailed knowledge of the missing Alcatraz prisoners has proven invaluable in helping the task force identify and track the returning inmates.
- Emerson Hauser - an FBI agent and former police officer who arrived on the dock at Alcatraz to find the prisoners gone in 1963, and currently heads the Alcatraz Task Force.
- Dr. Lucille "Lucy" Banerjee - Agent Hauser's partner and friend. In 1963, she served as a psychiatrist at Alcatraz
- Raymond "Ray" Archer - Rebecca's great uncle and former Alcatraz prison guard, that took care of her.
- Tommy Madsen - Rebecca's grandfather and Ray's brother, a prisoner for Alcatraz that was the first to return
Fandom
The Alcatraz fandom never quite took off despite the science fiction/mystery aspect of the police procedural show and the fact that it stars Jorge Garcia (Lost) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park). The two female stars, Sarah Jones and Parminder Nagra, got a lot of recognition in the fandom; the latter went on to star in a popular show The Blacklist as Meera Malik. The fandom peaked in 2012 - the same year it aired and was cancelled, with only a few works posted in 2013. The fandom was mainly focused on FanFiction.Net, Archive of Our Own and LiveJournal with only a few fanworks posted elsewhere such as YouTube, DeviantArt, and Tumblr.
The main pairings for the fandom are: Emerson/Lucy and Jack/Rebecca, rarely any other although the series had a lot of perspectives for fans of slash and incest. The main characters in fanworks are usually focused on the main characters: Emerson, Rebecca, Doc, Tommy and Jack Sylvane.
Common tropes and themes are telling the missing scenes aka history between characters and fix-its for the season's finale and cliffhanger.
