Zoë is a character in Joss Whedon’s television series Firefly and the movie sequel Serenity. Zoë fought in the Unification War together with Malcolm Reynolds. She stays calm in high pressure situations and has a rather dry sense of humour. She is married to Wash, the pilot.
Fandom
Despite being the ship's second-in-command, Zoë turns up relatively rarely in fanworks compared with Mal, Simon, Jayne and sometimes River. It is possible she is a casualty of fannish racial discrimination or of discrimination against female characters, or other factors might be at work.
Shipping
Zoe/Wash is one of the most popular ships in the fandom. Zoe is rarely shipped with other characters. Some works examine their pre-canon relationship and there is a lot of fluff works in this pairing. Post Serenity many works examined Zoe's grief following Wash's death, while other works were Everybody Lives AUs.
