Yellowjackets is a thriller-drama TV series that follows the story of a high school girls' soccer team who become the survivors of a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. It is told in two timelines running simultaneously: in 1996, when the characters were teenagers, following them from before the crash through to the 18 months they spent stranded in the wild; and 2021, in their adulthood, where the events of the crash and what happened afterwards continue to haunt and affect their lives.

It was widely well-received, receiving critical acclaim and numerous accolades, as well as a large fandom surrounding it on social media spaces.

The casting of the adult and teenage versions of characters was an aspect of the show which received particular praise both from fans[1] and in award nominations, and the cast playing the characters worked closely to maintain mannerisms and consistency between the teenage and adult portrayals.

Fandom

The fandom for Yellowjackets is varied, given its widespread acclaim, however fanworks tend to lean heavily towards sapphic interpretations of characters and sapphic pairings, especially on AO3 and Tumblr. As of August 2023, AO3 had 1,907 fanworks; 1,724 of them were F/F.

Fandom spaces across various online platforms engage in a lot of theorising about what will unfold in the expected five-series run, not least of all which other characters will die in the wilderness and how, what the ongoing trauma means for the adult story-lines, whether there are other characters who are alive in the 2021 timeline that have yet to be revealed (particularly after it was revealed that Van was alive and would appear in the adult storyline in Season 2), and whether any of the characters are making it out of the five seasons alive.

Pairings

Sapphic/Femslash Pairings

Duaric/Het Pairings

Poly ships are also reasonably common in the fandom, with various combinations of the characters.
