Writing memes are lists of writing prompts found on tumblr. People participate in writing memes for a number of reasons, to increase the content of their favorite series, characters or ships, to fight Writer's Block or just for fun. Users that want to participate reblog the masterlist of prompts, which are usually numbered or labelled with icons to make things easier. They then ask their followers to send them a ship or a character and a number or prompt through the Tumblr Ask Box and they'll write an oneshot with it. After finishing their piece, the author posts it on their tumblr blog by replying to the ask. Fanfics generated on Tumblr Writing Memes are often crossposted on AO3.
Sometimes writing memes don't involve asks, and are just created as an on-going writing challenge where authors are meant to fill all the prompts, but still can be used as a tumblr ask box writing meme. Writing memes created for specific fandoms can also be reblogged to be done with different fandoms from the originally intented one. RP Starters memes also make good Tumblr Ask Box Writing memes.
