Excerpts
I have *very* intense reactions to things that I read. If I pick up a book in the store, I can get all kinds of information out of the blurb on the back, but it's rarely going to tell me that someone dies or gets raped or has sex. I don't want fanfiction to be any different.
Yes, I've got intense reactions to fiction. Yes, I have most of the "big" triggers: death, rape, graphic violence. I also have triggers that are pretty small and personal, and I think most people would agree it's my look-out if I have Issues with "blowjob, heavy on the blood" and "POV character gets squicked, so You Will Too".* So why isn't it my look-out for the other things as well? To my mind, they all fall into the same category. Yes, more people might have the death-squick (or the death-kink), but the prevalence of a pattern of thought doesn't mean that we have to go about accomodating it in art.
