Fannish History
I became a slash fan by accident in the year 2000. My RL friends and I were rabid fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I'd been a fan of many other shows (mainly scifi), but Buffy was the first time I tried to win an argument by searching for canon details on the internet. What I found instead was an explicit Spike/Xander story. I read it through my hands, hardly able to believe that someone was allowed to write something that seemed so blindingly hot and so obviously true to the characters.
I created a free hotmail account, and started to subscribe to Buffy mailing lists and immediately started saving slash to disk and building my own library of stories, many of which I extensively edited and re-formatted. There were a lot of purple stories in Buffy fandom back then.
A few months of familiarising myself with the Buffy fandom set me up. When I saw an episode on tv that had a fade-to-black scene for Willow and Tara, it annoyed me so much that I had to write the resultant sex scene myself.
