Doctor/Clara Oswald is the usually het pairing of The Doctor and Clara Oswald from Doctor Who fandom. Clara is most commonly paired with the Twelfth Doctor, but there is also a reasonable fandom for Eleven/Clara. Recently a small number of femslash works have paired Clara with the Thirteenth Doctor. All other Doctor/Clara pairings are rare.

Pairing Names

  • Eleven/Clara is known as Whoufflé, due to Oswin baking a soufflé in her first appearance.
  • Twelve/Clara is known as Whouffaldi, which smooshes Whoufflé and Capaldi.
  • Thirteen/Clara is sometimes called Soufflaker, which smooshes soufflé and Whittaker.
  • Ten/Clara is sometimes called Allonswin

Although it is also not uncommon to have the ship or tag to just be the Doctor's number and Clara's name smushed together as well, for example: Twelveclara

Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Hurt/Comfort: it seems like Hurt Clara might be slightly more popular, although there is also a large amount of Hurt Doctor fanworks. There is also many fics where they are both hurt, usually going through something traumatic together, and taking comfort from each other.
  • Canon Divergence AU: where to diverge varies, but diverging just before or just after the events at the end of series 9 is common, usually with Clara continuing to travel with the Doctor. Having Clara continue to travel with the Doctor, either full or part-time, often means she meets other companions, like Bill Potts or Thirteen's "fam".
  • Human AU: there is a small number of fanworks where The Doctor is human and not a Time Lord, and they meet under other circumstances. The Doctor is often given the name John Smith in these stories, his common human alias in canon, although some fans will get creative and create a completely different human name for him.
  • Missy: many Twelve/Clara fanworks often feature Missy as well. What role Missy takes varies, from antagonist to ally to rival for the Doctor's affections.

Twelve/Clara

There was some discourse around the shipping of Twelve/Clara because of the large age gap between the actors. This seemed to take the form of some fans not understanding the ship's appeal or being unhappy that others were having fun shipping the pair. An example of some of this discourse is seen here:

[Anon ask]
why do people ship clara and twelve? isn’t it kinda awkward to people that ship whouffaldi (i think that’s spelt right?) that there’s a physical age gap between them of like 50 years. now i know that the doctor is thousands of years old but it’s the age of the body that really matters, because shipping other doctors isn’t as bad because they’re younger physically. so why don’t all of you whouffaldi shippers find it weird? i hope this makes sense

Anon, I gotta say your question sounds a tiny bit troll-y, but I'm here to respond to any and all asks that come my way, so I'll take your question at face value and give you a serious answer.

Firstly, I'm going to set aside the whole issue of the fact that the Doctor actually is, as you say, thousands of years old, and I'll just talk about the apparent age gap between Twelve and Clara, which seems to be what bothers you. Okay, so in Deep Breath, Clara is revealed to be 27 years old (also Jenna Coleman's age at the time of filming), and Peter Capaldi was 55 when that episode was filmed, so in terms of appearance, there's a 28-year age gap, which isn't quite as obscenely vast as you seem to find it.

But yeah, there's an age gap there, and it doesn't trouble me in the slightest. We've got two fully-mature, consenting adults here. And to me, it's simple - Clara is hot and attractive, Twelve is hot and attractive, and they're hot and attractive together. When I look at them, all I see is two people with insane romantic chemistry. I'd go so far as to say that the apparent age difference between Twelve and Clara only adds to their appeal for me - they're not an obvious coupling at first glance, and I love unlikely pairings.

Obviously you and I have very different perspectives on this issue, Anon, and I don't imagine we'll find common ground any time soon. You are welcome to your opinion, and I appreciate the opportunity you've given to provide mine.[1]
