Tidus (Japanese: ティーダ, Hepburn: Tīda) is the protagonist of the Squaresoft video game Final Fantasy X, and a minor character in the Square Enix/Disney video game Kingdom Hearts.
Canon
Star player of the famous Blitzball team, the Zanarkand Abes, Tidus is gifted with about as much personality as you would expect from a sports star.
After being sent a thousand years into the future by a monster named Sin, Tidus found himself in the world of Spira where, to both his surprise and chagrin, he discovered that his father Jecht was still incredibly famous as a legendary guardian.
Inadvertently following in the man's footsteps, he vowed to guard a naive young summoner named Yuna, coincidentally the daughter of Braska, whom Jecht had guarded ten years prior.
Tidus eventually learned how his father existed in this time period however, and ultimately of his fate, as a Dream of the Fayth. Tidus had to ultimately help Yuna discard everything she believed in, in order to let the Fayth sleep again, and their Dream come to an end; namely him.
Final Fantasy X is the last main numbered Final Fantasy installment to allow the player to name the protagonist; thus, unlike other characters, the protagonist's name is never spoken aloud in cutscenes.
Fandom
While Tidus is certainly more upbeat than Cloud or Squall, some fans believe that he come across as whiny rather than relatable, and that doesn't really have any notable quirks.
Tidus was the fourth-most-popular male Final Fantasy character according to a 2012 Square Enix poll.[1] In a 2010 Famitsu poll, Tidus was voted the 20th-best video-game character.[2] In 2020, Tidus was also voted as the seventh best character in the entire Final Fantasy franchise in a Japanese poll by NHK.[3]
The infamous "laughing scene" in Final Fantasy X, in which Tidus and Yuna laugh like crazy people, is often held up as an example of terrible English dubbing because they sounded "fake". In actuality, not only do they sound just as fake and over the top in the Japanese version, this was the entire point of the laughing scene (specifically, to show that Tidus, at that point in the game, can't feign happiness very well). Note both of the characters laughing (normally) at how ridiculous they sound a second later. The other characters thought they'd gone out of their minds - this would require context, however, when the scene is always brought up completely void of such.[4]
Because Tidus' name isn't spoken aloud in Final Fantasy X, some English-language fans debate as to whether Tidus' name should be pronounced as "Tee-dus" or "Tie-dus"; the latter pronunciation was used in the English dub of Kingdom Hearts (2002), while the former has been used in other media.
In Kingdom Hearts fan works, Tidus is often portrayed as a friend and classmate of Sora, Riku, and Kairi, especially in high school AUs.
