Author's Note
I wrote the original series, Federation and Empire in the early seventies, during one of the most exciting periods of science fiction fandom, and the beginings of the Star Trek activism. The ohginal series was based, of course, on "Mirror, Mirror" by Jerome Bixby and originally published in the Star Trek magazine, "BABEL".
I was lucky. Because of Fed/Emp, I was nominated for a HUGO in 73 but lost to Bjo Trimble. It's been twenty years, and I still get fan mail. My writing career took another course, but now I’m back. To all those that have had to wait twenty years to find out what happened after the first four novellas-my apoligies. My husband firmly belives that I will always "run late." Actually, I maintain, those who remember "BABEL" will understand that this novel is simply a ulittle" behind schedule.
This novel is the logical extrapolation of what would have happened over eighty years in an Alternate Universe after Spock took the USS Kirk's advice, deciding his Empire was "illogical." Pursuing the "dark side" of Star Trek, whether Original, or Next Generation is a challenge.
