The Refuge was a Newsies slash fanfiction archive created in May 2004[1] and hosted by queenitsy. It also included a forum. It had 1691 members and 231 stories when it went down in 2020, after years of apparent inactivity.[2] Despite the many works hosted, the Wayback Machine only seems to have archives of a few dozen works.[3] Queenitsy's works are still available on their personal archive, Underage Smokers.[4]
Rating System
The Refuge used a site-specific rating system, created by user Poison Ivory.[5]
L - Les. Suitable for all audiences, even tiny sheltered boys with enormous eyes.
B - Boots. Suitable for almost all audiences – not tiny sheltered boys, but tiny unsheltered boys are A-OK. In other words, some discretion advised. Suggested for ages 9 and up.
J - Jack. May contain some naughty language, mild violence, or suggestive adult themes. Good for streetwise young heroes who've been around but still possess a certain innate innocence. Suggested for ages 13 and up.
S - Spot. Contains sexual situations, coarse language, and/or violence. Suitable for tough, cocky borough leaders who are handy with a slingshot. Suggested for ages 16 and up.
RT - Racetrack. Contains explicit sex, extreme violence, and/or language that would make a sailor blush. For adults only.
