Summaries
From an ad in Datazine #49: "Why did James Kirk give up the 'center seat' after Vejur and his gamble to win back the Enterprise? How did Spock come to captain a 'boatload of children'? The answers will intrigue you. The peaks and valleys of one of the legendary friendships, from a surprising perspective."
From The Trek Fan's Handbook: "The friendship of Kirk and Spock told from a surprising perspective."
One fanzine collector commented about the book: "This is an unauthorized, self-published Star Trek novel. Unlike most fan fiction, however, this is not in fanzine format, but instead in trade paperback format, printed by Metropole Litho, who print books for a number of publishers. That's why it's listed here. An ad in Datazine said one method of payment was by credit card over the phone.
Reactions and Reviews
The Reckoning is a sequel to Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath's Pocket novel The Prometheus Design. After this book was published, Walker was advised by Pocket and/or Paramount not to try this again, and she returned to standard fanzine format for her subsequent fanfic.I don't know whether Walker ever tried selling the book through retail channels (there's no price or UPC bar code on the cover), but she did sell a number of the books at conventions. Copies are hard to find now, though I know at least one fellow collector found a copy in late 2002 or early 2003. [1]
I was not the only one who could not read any more than three chapters of this one rather expensive 'zine. It's THE RECKONING by Janet Walker, 210 pages typeset and perfect bound—like a regular quality paperback. We picked it up at a dealer's table. It has no price or address on it. It isn't listed in DATAZINE. The cover is shiny black. In the opinion of three seasoned treklit readers, this book is unreadable because of the clumsy handling of many long, dense, flashbacks. It may be a good book, but we'll never find out because we can't read the thing. [2]
I, too, bought Janet Walker's THE RECKONING (at Roberta Rogow's table at a January '87 con in NYC), and I too found it impossible to slog through. [3]
Even though this zine has been in production for a few years, this zine is a well-written zine story from Janet Walker in Canada. It's called THE RECKONING. It's a story about why did James Kirk give up his command after Vejur and his chance to get back the ENTERPRISE as with Spock becoming the Captain with a ship full of young kids. It's great as it deals in the legendary friendship and with his relationship with Nyota Uhura his communications officer. It's worth a great read session. [4]
