The Many Gardens of the Shikabane-hime is a series of recursive Dreaming of Sunshine fanfiction by wafflelate. The main premise of the fic is that Nara Shikako accidentally throws herself into an alternate universe during Dreaming of Sunshine's Land of Hot Springs Arc, and must universe-hop through many alternate universes to find her way home. Many Gardens also started a trope among Dreaming of Sunshine recursive fic, commonly referred to as gardens fic.

As of yet there are three separate fics in the series, which wafflelate as written out of chronological order. In publishing order, wafflelate published Lone Wolf, Art of Losing, and the dark fire will not avail you as well as several miscellaneous scenes on her tumblr. Chronologically, the dark fire will not avail you is the first verse, then Lone Wolf is the 8th universe, and Art of Losing occurs much, much later.

Premise

Shikako — commonly referred to as Gardens!Shikako — arrives in each new universe in Land of Hot Springs and must travel to the Gelel temple in Land of Wind in order to move on to the next verse. Eventually Shikako figures out that the only way to get home is to send a version of herself to every universe a once, an event called "the Split".

the dark fire will not avail you

Shikako attempts to escape the Jashinists in Land of Hot Springs and flings herself into a universe where the native Shikako managed to avert the Uchiha Massacre only to be snatched up by ROOT. Gardens!Shikako discovers that Sai is an Uchiha in this verse and travels to Wind with him and Uchiha Sasuke.

This verse is commonly referred to as "DF", as in "DF!Sasuke" and is named after a quote from Lord of the Rings. The quote for this installment is:

Lone Wolf

Shikako encounters a version of Hatake Kakashi who has become a missing-nin following Shimura Danzou becoming Hokage roughly four years before canon Naruto starts. Shikako also encounters Uchiha Shisui and becomes involved with the Uchiha Clan's attempts to oust Danzou. Lone Wolf was originally posted in September of 2017 on the Dreaming of Sunshine forum on fanfiction.net as "an excuse for[missing-nin Kakashi" but was removed in June of 2018[1] in anticipation of revision and posting to AO3.

This verse is commonly referred to as "LW" as in "LW!Kakashi" and begins with a poem:

The Art of Losing

After the Split, Shikako finds herself in a verse where she and Kakashi are platonic soulmates and Kakashi has been broken by ROOT. This verse is commonly referred to as "AoL" as in "AoL!Kakashi". It's both named after and begins with a quote from the poem One Art by Elizabeth Bishop.
