Reactions and Reviews
'The Hunted and the Hunters' is a treat for Sulu fans. Sulu is kidnapped by an alien tribe of reptile-like beings, learns to live as they do, and is accepted into the tribe. he becomes quite fond of his new brethren and has mixed feelings about being rescued. It's a good portrayal of an alien life form and culture, and an excellent characterization of Sulu. [1]
The best written piece is 'The Hunted and the Hunters,' a Sulu story with Hall's usual excellent characterization. [2]
The best story I think is Anna Mary Hall's 'The Hunted and the Hunters.' Just great as far as writing goes, a beautiful depiction of the aliens involved and their psychology, and a well-executed ending. I't be hard to find one thing wrong with it. [3]
After a shuttle crash, Sulu is carried off by reptilian hunter-gatherers. After living with them for several months, learning the work and helping to guard against flying predators, he joins the tribe and becomes "knifemate" to one of the lead hunters (female). While carefully following the Prime Directive, he manages to show the people that they can turn the tables on the predators (my, my, what will that end up doing to the local ecology?) before he is retrieved. Well written; good aliens. [4]
Although the market for Vulcan stories will probably always remain open I hope to see changes in in fanfic, because I think other people are getting tired of the Spock stories too. For this reason I thought that "The Hunted and the Hunters" in Interphase was one of the best stories to come out this year... [It is a] brilliant interpretation of a group of sentient aliens, the life style and their psychology.[5]
