The First Dream of the New Year is a Kirk/Spock story by Lyon.

It was published in the print zine KSX #1.

Summary

"While Kirk is stranded on a planet during an ion storm, Spock is unable to sleep from missing his lover and decides to create a fantasy to make love to until Kirkʼs return."

Reactions and Reviews

The final story in the zine is Lyon's "The First Dream of the Year". Kirk and the rest of the landing party are temporarily stranded on a planet until an ion storm clears so they can be beamed up. On the Enterprise, Spock tries to get some sleep—as per Kirk's orders — but finds himself too horny, as he and Kirk had begun a relationship about a month before. He eventually decides to masturbate, and the bulk of the story is the fantasy he uses to stimulate himself. The fantasy may have gone on a little too long, but it was very erotic and had some beautiful images. It also contained some interesting anecdotes from reality, and Spock ends up learning something about himself as a result. The best part is when Kirk returns to the Enterprise—earlier than expected—and the brief but heart warming conversation that follows. The mood is very tender, making for a lovely, light-hearted story, and a perfect one to end the zine on. [1]

"The First Dream of the New Year" by Lyon is exactly that: an erotic fantasy Spock is spinning while he's waiting for his lover. Not much plot, but very detailed and colorful. [2]

THE FIRST DREAM OF THE YEAR by Lyon is another wonderful story, the whole first part of which is Spock masturbating. I adored the very first line that Spock says to himself: "Fuck."

They've been lovers for "one month, fourteen days, four hours, twenty three minutes, and an odd number of seconds" and Kirk is trapped on a planet below. Spock goes into a trancelike dream of the red sands of Vulcan and pon farr. Wow! There's too much to recount here, but it's really fine writing and very involving. Spock makes passionate love with Kirk—all in his mind— but boy! What a mind! Here's just a taste (so to speak): "With savage abruptness, Spock seized hold of the human and pulled his lover to him. He heard the slap of flesh and Kirk's sharp grunt at the collision of their bodies. Clawing at Kirk's back, he tore away the last tatter of gold shirt. He pressed his mouth against the other man's, forced his tongue deeply inside, raking its roughness against the smooth prisoner he found there, making Kirk taste his own come, making him swallow it. H rose suddenly, pulling Kirk up with him, effortlessly sweeping the human up into his arms. Hastily Kirk flung his arms around the Vulcan's neck in an attempt to keep his balance in the abrupt capture. Desire overwhelmed Spock's awareness, narrowing it to a single, urgent purpose—to lay his lover down upon the red flecked sand and take him, to bury his own burning flesh within the cool moisture of Kirk's body."

And there's more. Way more. Excellent writing and powerful images. [3]

Spock and Kirk are separated for the first time since they have become lovers. In eighteen hours they will be together again. A magnetic storm has rendered the transporters inoperable, stranding Kirk on the planet,

while Spock, under orders to rest, orbits above. Spock finds himself so obsessed by thoughts of his missing lover that he seeks sanctuary in Kirk’s bed. The bed, molded to Kirk’s contours, is as uncomfortable to Spock’s more angular physical form, as aspects of this new, intensely emotional sexual relationship is uncomfortable to Spock’s psychic makeup. He slips into a dream. Once again he is back on Vulcan facing his lover at the place of Koon-ut-kal-if-fee. Only this time there is a different outcome. This piece is so lyrical, and so beautifully detailed, that the reader is swept away by the descriptions that almost have the rhythm of music. Jim Kirk as symphony.

Lyon wrote only three K/S stories that I know of. [4]

The First Dream of the Year by Lyon takes place during an ion storm that keeps Kirk trapped on the planet below and Spock trapped on the Enterprise above. It is a stressful and restless night for Spock who tries to sleep in his new lover‘s bed in Kirk‘s absence. Fitful dreams are filled with Kirk, which only leaves Spock more frustrated. This is a nice little story that takes a peek inside that incredible Vulcan mind. [5]
