Enter The Garden, fanart by reiya_wakayama.

Artist's Note: "Drawn from desrciptions of the Dragon's Circle. There were many conversations on what it would look like and it's shape. The garden is circular (thus the whole circle concept) with four dragon statues situated in the garden. Kilgharrah, being the big main one, it in the northern portion of the garden with three smaller ones in the other cardinal directions. It is very wild and over grown with paths through it. There is a small body of water just behind Killy as well."[1]

The Dragon's Circle is a Merlin/Arthur Modern AU by finem. It was written for Paperlegends 2012. It is set up as part one of a bigger series, Emrys Rising.

Summary: Camelot University is both the safest and most dangerous place for Merlin to hide while he waits for his magic to mature. One term; it's all he has to last, and then he can take his rightful place in the magical community and get to the heart of why magic is fading in the world. One term of laying low, keeping to himself, and getting ready for what is to come. It's a solid plan...until Arthur Pendragon steps into the picture.

reiya_wakayama made an illustration based on a scene from the story.[1]

Recs and Reviews

Why I loved it: OMG, the world-building, the plotting, the perfect characterizations, the tension building and building impossibly high. I can't say enough good things about this one. My only quibble was the ending (not completely tied up) but she promises more. Drop everything and go read this one![2]

First, this is part one of a longer series. But in this 62k we are given plenty to enjoy and the ending was satisfying enough for me to want more, but not leave me with that itchy ‘I just read a WIP’ feel. I’ll be very happy, though, if the author does continue this series. I love this university AU. It’s fresh and different. The universe is completely fascinating. [...][3]

Love, love, love this story! Very beautiful and intriguing. Loved the way magic was worked into our world and what Uther was doing with it. Great use of Uther as a magic hater and the consequences of it. Also, brilliant way of keeping up with canon details, such a Morgana. Wonderful, I can’t say it often enough ^^;

Arthur and Merlin start off on the wrong foot and a kind of prank war starts between them. It gets out of hand very quickly. I liked the use of Gwaine, pity there wasn’t more with him. If I didn’t ship Merthur, I’d ship Merlin/Gwaine ^^;

There is one small thing. Perhaps the story was posted in a hurry (happens, when there is a posting schedule) but there are a couple of spelling and grammar mistakes. I’d say after another read-through by a beta and everything should be okay.

As I understood, this story took some time to be written. I’m really excited about the next part and will be waiting for it with bated breath![4]

A great re-telling of their story, in a modern world that keeps some of the best elements of the antique story. With an Avalon hidden by mists, binding people in a magical tree, and binding gadgets that restrain magic. Very interesting, worth reading and waiting for the next installment of the Rising Emrys series[5]
