Temuera's NZ Nationality and Maori Heritage
Not sure if this should go on the page (especially as I don't have any concrete examples to cite right now) but I feel like a notable portion of fannish interest in the Morrison since his appearance on these newer live-action Star Wars shows (The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, etc) has been due to his Maori heritage. I've definitely seen people saying online that Morrison and Wen were sidelined in the production b/c they are poc, or at least darkly hinting at racism. (Again, I'll try to dig up links). -- Quaelegit (talk) 23:33, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- Okay looking into it more I haven't found those accusations (though if I'm not misremembering them, it would be good to find and document them) but I *am* finding more interest and appreciation for Morrison's Maori culture, and for his work in incorporating that culture into Star Wars (particularly Mandalorian) worldbuilding and design. There *may* have been a surge in interest beginning with Morrison's appearance in The Mandalorian but I'm finding Tumblr posts older than that about the topic (Thank you tumblr users who haven't de-activated over the past decade <3). - okay when Temuera was talking abt how he got to incorporate so much of his Maori background into Boba, especially how they showed how his specific fighting style is directly influenced by the Haka….
- no one is doing it like temuera morrison, he really got himself cast in a big tv show like that and did everything within his power to portray the character with as many specifically Māori traits as possible. actively encorportating the haka into how he fights? specifically requesting a weapon which could be wielded like a taiaha?? and then theres a whole section in the doco about how important using Māori culture in boba fetts character was. absolute fucking national treasure
- People who have no clue about maori / polynesian culture will never understand how much tbobf is influenced by it. For example just the tent scene where the tusken leader talks about the sand people history. Believe it or not but it is so similar to Aotearoa’s (NZ) past. The english soldiers took the Maoris land and claimed it as their own. The indigenous warriors were strong but they haven’t had the technologys and weapons like guns and rifles. So they couldn’t fight them for long. They had to make deals to survive. There is so much more in the series like the way Boba fights, how they made their own totokia’s and the war dances. I just love that Tem has the chance to bing a part of himself into his own show. He deserves it so much. I love him.
- My head is so full right now I can’t even form coherent thoughts but. I just need to express how phenomenal it was to see a Māori actor play a character inspired by Polynesian culture, and then use that character to discuss sacred land and indigenous rights. It’s so rare to get ANY form of Polynesian representation, and for Temuera to provide larger representation and then make specific representation to the Māori Polynesian branch is just. I can’t even speak. Because Polynesia is so big and very culturally similar, most writers or production teams would simply use the surface value. But there are specific Māori elements woven into the show. Boba’s staff based on a taiaha, traditional carving methods are referenced in its creation, and obviously the haka at the end of the show. It’s just phenomenal to see a show go beyond the surface level and represent things that aren’t normally in American media. And I know we owe it all to Temuera. When the Mandalorian came out, he mentioned how he asked for these elements to be included. He pushed for those cultural elements and representation and I just. No words. Just phenomenal.
