I don't know if I'm the only one, but I wouldn't say that one-shot is ff.net lingo. In fact, I think I've seen it on LJ just as much, while standalone doesn't get used as often. Maybe it's fandom-specific and not site-specific? -- Rodo 09:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

IAWTC. I don't think it's specific to ff.net either.--Ratcreature 09:55, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
I've seen the terms used about interchangeably. I suppose we could ask people who were in fandom before ff.net if they ever used "one-shot" or saw it in use... Maybe it came to LJ *from* ff.net? -- Liviapenn 10:15, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
It think it may have come to ff.net via usenet. I have vague memories of the term being used in Trek fandom, along with 'standalone'. A quick search of google groups comes up with this reference in August of 1998, which I think is just prior to ff.net being founded. I'm not sure how reliable groups dating is though... -- Dr. Jekyl 13:21, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
"And closing our night is MODERN TREKSMUT THEATER, featuring oneshot works from some of the best TREK SMUT writers on the net."
The description from http://www.knightwriter.org/Shop/Start2.cgi?C=D&I=SD0&T=504217 Knight Writer Press for a zine Over The Edge lists
A one-shot multi-media, multi-genre zine. We have original fiction by Rachel Travis, Carrie Kroft, and Karla Giffords. Straight fiction: Walker: Texas Ranger (Warren), War of the Worlds (Treat, Mac, Benson, Norman). And slash fiction: Wild Wild West (Millard), The Man From UNCLE (Khylara), Houston Knights (Duval), and War of the Worlds (Smythe, Calhoon). 151 pages.

::::My guess is that this one was early 90s, like 1993-1994 for this, as Walker:Texas Ranger started in 1993, and all of the other listed fandoms are earlier. So it definitely predates FF.net. --rache 18:29, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

merging with standalone?

I think it should just be merged with the other article. These seem to be synonyms.--Ratcreature 19:08, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

I agree. I don't think we need two articles for the same thing, unless there is a significant divergence in history or meaning. --rache 19:37, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. -- Liviapenn 22:28, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Also agreed, especially since I think the overall page should include "one-off" as well -- I've seen that used in various places, both for fanfic and for episodes/books/etc. --Arduinna 22:36, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
