Talk:MCYT/Sandbox

Hi there, I noticed this page hasn't had an edit since the 7th and has a tag saying its already been abandoned. I wanted to know if it will continue to be worked on or if it really is abandoned, and also wanted to clarify that generally, unless parts of pages are very wrong, you wouldn't essentially re-create and re-arrange an entire page, as that removes content other editors worked hard on. Or at the very least, you wouldn't do that without first having a longer discussion about what you want to change and why on the talk page, as doing so will negate any negative fallout from other editors or gardeners when a large swatch of a page is majorly changed. Luckily, this sandbox page itself serves well for that purpose, so people may see changes you're considering! Though once it's finished congregating info I would still make a talk on the original MCYT page to have others go over it and make comments. They won't see this page otherwise. I have some of my own comments I'd like to add, for example, right now this sandbox page doesn't include the smush-words for certain sub-fandoms/ships (currently under subfandoms on the main page), which I do think should be included because those names are so numerous that there really ought to be somewhere people can find all of them for easy viewing.

I also did have a few questions on statements that I feel may require citations. Two in particular: the phrase "MCYT-adjacent" and who counts. As far as I have seen personally, Jschaltt is included in MCYT because he played a very big role in DreamSMP canon, and is in fact included in a lot of MCYT fanart, so I would like to know who is considering him, and others, "MCYT-adjacent," and where (Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube?) as this is a new phrase to me. My second question is on the coining of the term MCYT. This page, as well as the regular MCYT talk page, both have suggestions that MCYT started in the earlier 2010s, not in 2020, but so far I haven't seen any proof of that. Dates like that are best being cited somewhere, and as of right now the only citation comes from a Google stats page showing MCYT only had an uptick in 2020, which so far seems to be disproving the idea it came between 2010-2014. I understand Minecraft fandoms have started way before 2020, but the term itself, MCYT, and its first general usage, is what's being talked about, not Minecraft fandom as a whole. I might look into AO3 and see if "MCYT" is used on any very early MC fandoms from the early 2010s, that would be a good citation if so. It's of course still possible the term could have been used back then, just not as often as today, making it an obscure term until the 2020s and why Google stats show the way they do. But I still feel there needs to be a little more proof of that with a citation.

Well, that's really it, thanks for your work! Patchlamb (talk) 18:14, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

Sorry to talk again so soon, but here's what I found using AO3's search filters so far! "Minecraft Youtubers", non-abbreviated, first used 2013 for Team Crafted (but only used in 194 fics).[1] The acronym, "MCYT," first used in 2019 for a Team Crafted fic.[2] "Minecraft Youtuber," first used 2020 for a Dream/George fic.[3] Lastly, there's a category you can select as a tag but it's not really a tag, called "Youtubers Playing Minecraft (Video Blogging RPF)" which was first used in 2017.[4] So right now as far as AO3 goes, there is a "Minecraft Youtubers" category/tag used 194 times as early as 2013, but the acronym doesn't show up on AO3 till 2019 in Team Crafted fandom. If anyone finds data for the usage of these terms outside of AO3 that would be great, "MCYT" could still have been used more somewhere outside of AO3. Patchlamb (talk) 18:31, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Hi, sorry, it's not abandoned! I just have been busy. The sandbox template just says that, I should probably remove them. I'm working on it more. The ships tend to be either for more specific subfandoms, but can probably be included. Also, this isn't meant to COMPLETELTY rewrite, I'm just working on my own version that I can properly integrate later after talking to others. MCYT wasn't coined in 2020, I was in the fandom in the early 2010s and it was used then too. I actually have some references of fanwork using it in 2014-2015 that I plan on adding here. I'll make a proper talk topic later, again the reason I made this in the first place was so I wouldn't be directly messing with the article without a plan or asking about it first. MCYT-adjacent is a bit hard to define, but the fandom, especially on tumblr tends to use it for variety creators that don't like to be restricted to their Minecraft content, including Jschlatt. I appreciate the feedback, because it helps a lot!
(A lot of the earlier MCYT fandom isn't that well documented and it was relatively obscure, so I'm not surprised about the google stats) --Serilly (talk) 15:42, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks for getting back to me about it! I look forward to seeing more edits and citations as you work on it more, then. MCYT is so big it really deserves it, and I'm surprised the article wasn't made before 2021 tbh. Anyways thanks again! Just shout if you ever need any help reviewing or gathering anything :} Patchlamb (talk) 20:31, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Hopefully I'll work more on it more frequently, but my ADHD tends to make me forget projects easily. I have a lot of sources I need to comb through slowly --Serilly (talk) 14:47, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
