Talk:Kerr Avon
This is great - and I am excited it exists, is good, and includes my all-time-favourite picture of Avon with jaguars. I'll nick your trope layout, I think. Aralias (talk) 19:59, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Glad you like it -- much work still to be done! I need to do some reading around as many of these tropes are not in my usual cup of espresso -- feel free to add examples, as mine are a bit limited. Avon's animagus form is surely a black jaguar :) I'm thinking of adding an image gallery to include at least some of the other artists and illustrate the range. I nicked the trope layout from Aragorn, as I recall. Espresso Addict (talk) 07:31, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- Can do. Most of them are not my idea of an ideal coffee, either (although I have a terrible weakness for Blake as president...), but I've come across quite a few of them. Regarding the trope/rec layout, I really think it's a good idea - as it makes it clear what the point you're making with each example is, and it gets me away from the horrible quandary of whether I would be able to accurately lay claim to what the 'most influential' fics in the fandom were/are. I will imply, but now we also get a lot more examples - and I can sneak in some of my favourites, without caring whether they are influential or not (though I'm sure many are both my favourites and influential). Aralias (talk) 20:06, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think it's always easy to work out what the truly influential stories were at this distance in time, and many of them are in long-oop zines, so readers can't easily get an idea of the trope. Espresso Addict (talk) 09:01, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
Adding fics
I hope it is OK that I have added a few fics without asking. I've never edited before and wanted to see if I could managing it before offering to add more. I have a few ideas for PGP ones. I'd have to check for up-to-date links first, though. By the way, I'm really impressed by your efforts on this page and greatly enjoyed reading it!Guiser (talk) 19:49, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- That's absolutely fine, thanks! Fans are always encouraged to add their own favourite examples. I've been off reading my Big Pile o' Zines to come up with some more examples, some of which overlap with the ones you've added. Cheers, Espresso Addict (talk) 07:43, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
- I'm actually having second thoughts about some of the PGP ones I posted! Heartlands is very heavily Vila P-O-V and mithen's "Ghosts" isn't particularly Avon-o-centric. Some PGPs might be better listed as recs under the general PGP entry, or under other character entries, if anyone provides such entries in the future! On the other hand, I suppose a bit of duplication doesn't really matter. I think I'll look for some PGP's with a more Avonic point of view. I'm a bit reluctant to delete links to stories I like, but there are so many readable PGPs I'm sure you could list pages of the things! I'd be happy to hear what folks think. I've got a fair number of zines, so I think I'll have a look through those myself! Guiser (talk) 11:58, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
- I've copied the entire list to Post-Gauda Prime -- perhaps we could prune "Heartlands", "Flies in Amber" and perhaps "In My Hands" (much as I love it, it's more of a Vila story, really)? If you've any non-Avon-centric PGP favourites (as if, says this Avon fan) then do add them there. Espresso Addict (talk) 18:41, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
- I've been reading "In My Hands". I'm not completely sure where that one should go! There seems to be quite a lot of fics that feature Vila P-O-V regarding other characters, fics with varying degrees of insight into Vila himself. I suspect that if a Vila page goes up there will be lots of head-scratching! I'd probably be inclined to leave it in, if it was me. You could always review the situation later, depending on how long the recs lists get. Guiser (talk) 19:20, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- I think the initial reason for including it was it's the only example of the Avon Gets Executed scenario that I can bear to re-read! Though it's not Blake that orders the execution (which perhaps is part of why I can bear to re-read it). And we definitely need a Vila page, not to mention a Blake page, and an Avon/Vila page... Espresso Addict (talk) 21:17, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- I LOVE the work you folks are doing with Blake's 7! --Mrs. Potato Head (talk) 21:30, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks! There does seem to have been an explosion of interest of late. Espresso Addict (talk) 22:38, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- If there is interest in making individual pages for fics, I'd very much like to help. --Mrs. Potato Head (talk) 23:31, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- I'm always unsure what the purpose and scope of making articles on individual works of fanfiction is, particularly in fandoms where the coverage of authors is sparse. (Indeed, it wasn't till recently I started to do so at all.) We already have articles on some of the most widely read stories, as they come under novel zines.
- I've been gating my additions on must have been formally recommended at least twice, which is quite difficult to apply to the old zine stories -- many people who reviewed zines for courtesy included all the full-length stories, and tended, in my experience, to see the positive side even if they thought they sucked bigtime. And in terms of recs sites, there are so few -- Crack Van, EspRecs, B7 recs ... I can't offhand think of another that has more than a tiny handful.
- I'd been thinking of adding a few of my all-time favourites -- perhaps if we all did that then that would be a good starting place? And if we made a category, then others might be encouraged to add to them. Espresso Addict (talk) 18:18, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Interesting word press article
I found a link I had saved for a word press article (with comments), Characters of Note: Kerr Avon and Roj Blake. I think it is interesting enough to put a link to it somewhere, but I'm not sure where to put it. Alternatively, it does look quite quotable!
- I always wonder with Wordpress blogs quite how they fit into fandom–prodom spectrum -- a lot of people who would probably not self-identify as a fan use them to talk about media sources. In this case they do seem to be in contact with fandom (citing TV Tropes) so we could probably quote them under fans? Espresso Addict (talk) 18:27, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
- You've taught me a new word "prodom"! To be honest, after I posted that link, I did wonder whether it was a fannish enough source myself. I actually went back and looked at the article again and noticed in "recent posts" by the author, an article entitled "A Little Fanwork Manifesto pt2 Cosplay" and that lead me back to A Little Fanwork Manifesto pt1. In addition, the comments section suggests that the author is keen to talk to fans. So I thought there were enough indications of fannishness that it would be ok to cite the article. [Guiser]
- It does look as if the author at least reads fanfiction, which is probably sufficient for these purposes. Will find a suitable extract... (I think I might have coined prodom in this meaning; I suspect many people use it for a professional dominatrix...) Espresso Addict (talk) 15:40, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
