Talk:Gold Tinted Spectacles
ZineNovel vs. Fanfiction
Hello! I've been revisiting/researching some of the "classics" of Harry Potter fanfiction and, as this work comes up quite a lot, would like to flesh out the page a little bit. What struck me is that the work has been categorized as a "zine." I am by no means an expert, but in my experience the Harry Potter fandom is very internet-based and rather unfamiliar with zines in general; I was never even aware it was published as one until I read this page. And as far as I am aware, it was published on the internet before it was published in print; it was posted here in November 2003, then revised and re-posted in February 2004 (according to here, here, and here), and the Fanlore page says the zine was published in 2004. My question is, since it was first published as an online work and (IMO) best known as an online work within the fandom, should the "Zine" info box be changed to "Fanfiction" and details regarding the zine specifically be moved to the body of the article with a suitable heading?

Many zines today are offered online as netfic and then later sold in printed format (and then even later go back online). That's something that can be added to the page - no need to change the template since what this entry is documenting is the physical hard copy with the cover by TACS. So go ahead and add the dates/links to online versions to help flesh out its history.--Morgandawn 07:44, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- PS. If you feel there are significant differences and/or just want to document the online version on its own, you could make a seperate entry using the FanWork template and link to the zine version. And vice versa. I've been focusing on documenting the hard copy zines, but there are more and more entries being made for online works that never will make it into hard copy. All are part of fandom history. I have a list of online works in Supernatural fandom I want to document when I finish processing the boxes of zines fans have donated. --Morgandawn 07:58, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- Gotcha. I think I will end up making a separate page for the online version, Gold Tinted Spectacles (Harry Potter fic) versus Gold Tinted Spectacles (Harry Potter zine)? Forgive me if that's wrong, I'm still getting the hang of disambiguations.
Thank you! ~ Sparcicle 21:42, 27 November 2010 (UTC)- That is the correct naming convention, but as I understand it, you're talking about one piece of writing published in two formats. Why do you need two separate pages to talk about it? In many cases we've been combining a discussion of a fanfic with associated fanart, vids, and podfic based on the piece--all on the same page. You can always add redirects and more categories. If you find that the page gets too long, you can always separate the zine from the online versions, but this page is pretty short at the moment.--æþel 00:04, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

I went ahead and kept everything on the same page, but I added the fanfiction info box in addition to the zine novel one. I hope this is okay, I think it's pretty clear and non-repetitive. I tried to flesh out the page a little too, but I'm sure I'll have much more to add when I do a little more research and actually read the novel.

Sorry, I do have a question about this... Something isn't a zine, if it's not been officially printed? Even if it's a collection of various artist's works, both art and fanfiction? I've seen ArtZine, ZineAnthology, and ZineNovel now... And considering we have such things as e-books these days, I don't think it entirely fair to discount online collections from the 'zine' category. But if it's improper to categorize something that's only been in PDF form, I understand. What should I call it, though? Just straight-up 'Anthology'? [eta:] Okay, I've also seen 'e-zine' now... - "a collection of various artist's works, both art and fanfiction" -- If it's one fan creator, I'd call that a https://fanlore.org/wiki/Template:WebsiteAuthor or if it's more than one fan creator, then https://fanlore.org/wiki/Template:ArchiveProfile. --MPH (talk) 21:34, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
