Talk:BookTok
Which Infobox Template
I made this page with Template:Fandom because this was motivated by discussion on Discord about Booktok as its own community; but the Booktube page uses Template:GlossaryTerm, and to my (n00b, out of the loop) eye that looks like kinda the same thing. So, people who know more about either of these, feel free to change the infobox template. -- Quaelegit (talk) 06:11, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
- I personally still feel the "fandom" link of booktok and booktube is not super clear. BookTube probably has the glossary term because you might say X canon was popular on booktube. If we're considering these as fandom communities i think it would help to write somewhere what booktok is considered the fandom "of" and what fan accs do / people considering being on booktok fannish. BookTok drama (possible overlap with some of the talking points with fanworks)
I've seen a few things recently suggesting a growing commentary/criticism/shaming (mileage varies per video) of BookTok, dark romance, and taboo relationships in fiction. It's sharing a lot of the same phrases, complaints, and drama that happens over fanworks. It's not a new thing, I found threads complaining about BookTok and its impact on Dark Romance from years back, but I'm dropping some links in case anyone knows more/wants to dig into it:
- "One of the older discussions about it, 'booktok has severly impacted the dark romance community', r/RomanceBooks, 15 July 2022". Archived from the original on 2024-04-01.
- y'all please I cant take it anymore by Gabe Escobar, TikTok that prompted a lot of responses/stitches, complaining about BookTok reading "porn". Here's the search term for stitches (which only kind of works, you can only seem to search for all stitches with a creator?), which includes people criticising his video and the implications made as well as some making claims like BookTok is encouraging porn addiction.
- The phrase "BookTok gooner" is increasingly used to insult people who read books with sex scenes? It's referenced in this TikTok, also the comments here and on various other videos are also referencing porn addiction and throwing around words like "degenerates", which crosses over with complaints about fanworks. search results from TikTok...
- how tiktok ruined reading + the "booktok book" formula, YouTube video by Jack Edwards (click-bait-esque title, discusses BookTok in more positive way than title suggests.
- Dark Spicy Books and How Purity Culture Took Over Booktok, YouTube video by Hana

Post-USA election results + discussions on BookTok
I've seen some videos responding to other BookTokers who called for politics to be left out of BookTok, as well as some other videos about post-Election discussions on BookTok that I lacked context for which specific video(s) they were reacting to. So, I don't know where to start with summarising this, but it seems like it might be worth documenting, so some links for future reference. Rather than try to find the original videos/largest videos, I've just put some examples of the discussion and things that people are doing:
- General link to search
- miareads682 Vid#1 , miareads682 Vid#2, videos (and comments) about readers wanting to find authors who voted Democrat
- lizabookrecs, a video calling for keeping politics out of booktok
- liz_dolphin70_reads, asking why politics are being brought into booktok
- myreadsbooks response to KenziesBookNook, response to someone calling for politics to be left out of booktok (original video, stitched, appears to have been deleted)
- cowboylikel0la, someone who is creating a list for people wanting to avoid Republican voting romance authors
- book_reviews_kill, a response video to other videos calling for "Keep Politics off of BookTok"
- kayliereads_alot, another response video
- dorianisreading, a response discussing how listing books which contain political content isn't likely to address what people think it will
