Character and ship popularity over time
Just leaving this here: The filters on AO3 are often out of date, and sometimes just plain wrong, due to the way they update and a couple of bugs we haven't been able to pin down. I recommend not using the numbers in the gray box for any sort of official record, and instead actually doing a click-through, search, or filter action for each tag, as well as any tags that might have been left off the list. I'm going to see if we can get a public post to reference with the non-box data for the paragraph about character/shipping changes. -the old briar pipe (talk) 19:42, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
- Updating it to show it, although it's hard to go back and find out by looking through & counting, especially for the characters that existed before AOS since when I try to filter it by dates, it jumps around and gives me 2014 when trying to look for only 2013 stuff around September when I originally did the search so the numbers won't be completely exact either way. Anyway managed to update both sections (since I ended up separating the Characters from the Shipping section), although I still have one more section to edit in the Shipping, which were the October pairings that gained popularity.--Harpie (talk) 06:18, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
- Sadly, I discovered that doing a work search doesn't work either. /o\ I had to get a coder to explain it to me a couple of weeks ago, but once they did, I realized how complex the date system on AO3 actually is right now. Both filters and work search are set to run by last updated date, and there is apparently no way to force it to filter by posting date even though you can sort that way, because the command isn't supported on the back end. (We figured out what the URL command would be, and the place where it just isn't supportable in the code right now.) There are enough multi-chapter works that it really throws the numbers off for the larger ships and the percentages off for everyone; that's probably why you're seeing the jumping dates. I have access to data taken last September and weekly throughout the season - I just have to get a consensus from the contributors to post it somewhere accessible. I'll try to get on that in August. Thanks so much for working on this page! -the old briar pipe (talk) 17:22, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
- That sucks so much - you wouldn't expect it to be so complex with dates, but I guess it's good that you have that consensus. And your welcome, I had time and wanted to edit it finally before I forgot again. I want to get the page updated before Season 2 premieres.--Harpie (talk) 01:15, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
