Talk:Ageism in Fandom
A very brief off-the-top-of-my-head outline and beginning. Feel more than free to rename, revamp, add, subtract this page. --MPH (talk) 21:21, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
Rename
I think that this article should be renamed, I was thinking a new title could be "Ageism in Fandom". It would relate to other article titles like and "Misogyny in Fandom" and "Homophobia in Fandom", and I think it would fit the contents of the article. Are there any objections? --User:Kingstoken (talk) 17:22, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
Against Younger People & Against Older People
I think this page is missing the entire side of ageism in fandom that is directed at young people. I'm thinking specifically about fandoms of boy bands and such, which are largely teen or younger girls, which get almost universally mocked by both fandom and popular media. There's a lot of address about the subject wrt misogyny, young people's right to self-expression without judgement, and so on. I see this as distinct from Minors in Fandom, which is a discussion within fandom centered around what kind of content and interactions fans are having with each other. I'm talking about the more one-sided ridiculing and discounting of people's enthusiasm on the basis of them being young and thus stupid. Issues like these.
I want to make that side of this topic part of this page, but it seems this page was created just to address prejudice against older people, and I can't figure out how to fit this other side in with what's already here. All I can think of is putting everything already here under an "Ageism Against Older People" section and adding "Ageism Against Younger People" as the other half of the page. Thoughts? —caes (talk) 17:51, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
- I think starting a new section under "Ageism Against Younger People" below makes perfect sense. Perhaps add a short para at the beginning highlighting that it goes both ways. Also, there are existing quotes on Fanlore that talks about attitudes towards younger fans "younger fans" or "young fans".MeeDee (talk) 18:32, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

- "It's interesting listening to discussions between older and younger fans on some of the Internet lists. Some of those who've discovered fandom via the internet don't seem that interested In the history of fandom, which is sad. But on the other hand, some of the old-timers seem to resent newcomers, which is equally depressing." Historical irony as this was written in the 1990s https://fanlore.org/wiki/Discovered_In_A_Letterbox/Issues_21-24
I did some rewriting of the old against young section
I added some context, that this is a common, long-standing issue, that it didn't start with Twilight and One Direction.
Also, can someone add a date to the quote after "This is the origin of the term puriteen."?
And it sounds like the quote is the origin of puriteen? Is this really what is intended? --MPH 23:42, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
I did some big reorganization, but I did not remove any information. --MPH 00:19, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
