In my opinion, George Lucas has really painted himself and us into a corner with the characters in STAR WARS! For a start, he has created an ensemble of secondary and intermediate characters with far more style, verve, attractiveness and potentialthan his so-called HERO and HEROINE! Han, Chewie, Darth and Obiwan ARE STAR WARS, not only in the hearts of a large segment of the fandom, but in essence as well.

I have seen STAR WARS so many times I must surely qualify for at least an honourary mention in the Guineas Book of Records ha ha! but even with my total familiarity with the film my heart always skipped a beat when Obiwan, Luke and the droids arrived at the door of that sainted Cantina! Because I knew that STAR WARS was about to come to life!

With all due respect to Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, I have to admit that from the first viewing of SW on, I had not the slightest interest in Luke Skywalker. I know that sounds harsh and perhaps a little unfair, but I don't apologise, the dash, flash, daring and HUMOUR came into SW with Han and Chewie. ( The majestic elegance had already been there in the persons of Darth Vader and Obiwan ). Until that major and magic moment in the Cantina, SW had been interesting yes, but dull...

That (George Lucas) or anyone else could see Han Solo and the incomparable Chewie as sidekicks of Luke Skywalker defies reason- SIDEKICKS? My

dictionary defines a sidekick as an "amusing or servile follower with whom one shares adventures." Amusing fits, but Han Solo or Chewie as "servile followers ?" Who was following whom for a full third of the film?...[1]
