The Scooby Gang (or sometimes Scoobies or Scoobs) is a term used on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and by fans of the show primarily to refer to Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris and Rupert Giles, though it often also encompasses other principal characters depending on the season (usually romantic partners of the aforementioned, though not exclusively). The 'Core Four' is a more specific term and used exclusively for the four characters on their own.
Scooby Gang originated in the second season as a one-off pop-culture reference made by Xander, but in later seasons "good" characters sometimes used the term as a straight-forward description of their evil-fighting gang.
Core Four Controversy
By the end of the series several groups of fans felt there to be a marked difference between the Core Four and the other characters, though often for different reasons. Some felt that the group, principal characters from Season 1, were being neglected in favour of other characters such as Spike, while others argued that a double standard had been built into the show's moral compass, with non-core characters being excessively reprimanded for actions the Core Four were able to essentially get away with.
