Rhys Darby is a prominent Aotearoa (New Zealand) comedian, actor, and voice actor.
Darby has played supporting roles in a number of works with significant fandoms, including Coran in Voltron: Legendary Defender and the werewolf pack leader Anton in What We Do in the Shadows. However, his current fandom prominence comes primarily from his lead role in Our Flag Means Death, where he plays Stede Bonnet, the show's main character and love interest to Blackbeard (played by Darby's real-life friend and regular collaborator Taika Waititi).
Darby's role as Stede spawned increased fandom interest in him and in his previous roles, including a trend of shipping Darby and Waititi's other characters. This has included Vianton, a What We Do in the Shadows ship between Darby's Anton and Waititi's vampire character Viago (who interact very little in the film), and Freemanji (a Crossover Pairing between Darby's character from the Jumanji films and Waititi's character from the 2021 movie Free Guy).
