Stede Bonnet was a real historical figure from 18th century Barbados. For unclear reasons Bonnet chose to abandon a life of wealth and privilege to become a pirate captain, despite a complete lack of experience with either sailing or crime; he is sometimes known as the Gentleman Pirate in reference to his unusual class background.
During his brief career at sea Bonnet encountered the much more famous and successful pirate Blackbeard, and for equally unclear reasons Blackbeard chose to sail with him for a few months rather than simply killing Bonnet and stealing his ship. The two seem to have had a falling-out at some point, after which Blackbeard marooned Bonnet's crew and they likely never met again. Bonnet was ultimately executed for his crimes.
In fiction Bonnet is best known as the main character in Our Flag Means Death, where he was played by New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby. OFMD posited a romantic relationship between Bonnet and Blackbeard.
Bonnet also appeared in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, voiced by James Bachman.
