Edward Teach is a historical figure and real life pirate, better known as Blackbeard. Blackbeard appears in several piratey fandoms, such as Black Sails, Pirates of the Caribbean and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. His fandom presence is especially due to the success of Our Flag Means Death, in which he is a main character.

Canon

According to Wikipedia: in contemporary records his name is most often given as Blackbeard, Edward Thatch or Edward Teach; the latter is most often used. Several spellings of his surname exist—Thatch, Thach, Thache, Thack, Tack, Thatche and Theach. One early source claims that his surname was Drummond, but the lack of any supporting documentation makes this unlikely. Pirates habitually used fictitious surnames while engaged in piracy, so as not to tarnish the family name, and this makes it unlikely that Teach's real name will ever be known.[1]

Fandom Versions

In the TV show Black Sails, Blackbeard is played by Ray Stevenson.

In the game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag he is voiced by Mark Bonnar and called Edward "Blackbeard" Thatch.[note 1][2]

In OFMD, Blackbeard is portrayed by Taika Waititi, a Māori man, and speaks with Waititi's own Kiwi accent.

Fandom

Works with the character can be found since 2013 in AO3 when he gained a little prominence due to the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. After the 2021 release of OFMD, the number of transformative works featuring Blackbeard grew exponentially.

Notes

  1. ^ In Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Edward is referred to as "Thatch" (one of the many variations of Blackbeard's name known to have existed), rather than the more common "Teach". See Blackbeard: Early life (at Wikipedia) for more information.
