Return to Oz is not strictly faithful to any of the L. Frank Baum Wizard of Oz books, but incorporates elements from different Oz books, particularly The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, as well as the ruby slippers from the 1939 film[1]. Along with The Black Cauldron, it is part of the short experimental period in the 1980s known as Dark Disney, when Disney was willing to risk a PG rating. Neither film was a box office hit, and Disney quickly returned to G ratings and heart-warming happy endings. But it remains a favourite with fans nostalgically fond of 1980s fantasy, such as The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Willow.

As a rare and pre-internet fandom, there is not much in the way of fanworks dedicated specifically to Return to Oz (if I'm wrong, please correct me and add them here).
Vids
Return to Oz was a listed fandom for Festivids 2009. The comments posted to both vids about the source consistently mentioned how creepy the film was, and the nostalgia factor. One reading of Memory Lane suggested a queer interpretation of the relationship between Dorothy and Ozma.
Fanfiction
Fanfiction dedicated solely to this fandom is very rare, mostly appearing on FFN and AO3 - most are crossovers or mashups of Return to Oz with another Wizard of Oz fandom: such as Tin Man, Wicked, or Once Upon a Time.
