Author's Comments

From the preface to the zine Sanctuary:

I'm not the kind of writer who plans out every nuance of character in advance; I tend to sit down with an idea for challenging a specific person, toss him or her into the situation, and see what happens. Some times it works. But I always leam more about a character through such observations than through any kind of formal analysis outside the fiction.

And that was how "Requiem" was written. It investigates something that bothered me in JEDI every time I saw it. If Anakin turned to the Dark Side, then why does he show up at the end of the film in the same state of grace, if you will, as Yoda and Ben? Does every Force-sensitive get to do this? Is it an option available only to Jedi? Or is Palpatine still floating around out there? I picked the hours directly before the pyre sequence, wondering what Luke's thoughts and feelings might have been as he worked — and dug myself into a wonderful hole thereby. Desperate change of scene to the Jedi Masters, who answered some of my questions.

While writing, I had the first hints of what would eventually work itself out in Sith: Anakin's rather horrible role in the scheme.
