From a Flyer
"Reflections" by Lynn Montgomery, a slash Highlander novel, will be available in February, 1998. A new Highlander: The Series slash fan novel, offering an alternative history to the current sixth season. The story takes place after "The Modern Prometheus" and "Archangel" never happened. What could destroy Death? What memories, after three thousand years, still have the power to shatter Methos' soul? Joe's efforts to repair Duncan's and Methos' wounded friendship crash as they reach Egypt and Methos is confronted with his former life. Not just his years as Death, but Death's actual destruction, haunts Methos as he is faced with the memories and landscape of three millennia before. As Joe and Duncan struggle to understand the motivations of Death-and what could possibly destroy that confidence and persona-Methos must struggle to regain that confidence and reestablish his very identity. All he has known is called into question, including his very ability to love. His only hope: to go back in time, confront those memories, and travel the same road he'd traveled three millennia before. With Joe and Duncan as his audience, Methos weaves the tale, reliving as he does so the destruction of Death and how the love of two very different men brought him back from the edge. But as he spins his tale-and tries to rebuild his life-he has to meet Duncan's judgement head on, and Duncan must learn to accept Kronos in the role of a hero; friendship and identity hang in the balance. Reflections is an adult novel containing graphic violence and sex, including male/male pairings (Methos/Kronos, Methos/Caspian and Methos/Jakata, an original character). If this kind of story isn't your cup of tea, please do not order. This zine will not knowingly be sold to anyone under the age of 18. Illustrated by Leah Rosenthal, F. Cade, C. P. Foster, and Maryann Jorgensen with a full color cover. Approximately 241,000 words, 281 pages. Final Price: $24.00, postage included. [1]
From the Editorial
Welcome to the second Highlander zine published by Ashton Press in a month! This time we're bringing you a brand new slash novel focusing on the friendship between Joe, Methos and Mac in the present-day and what might have helped to shape the friendship and relationship between Methos and Kronos in the past. This story, as Lyrm will tell you in her own author's note, started out life as a short story. The end of the prologue was originally the end of the tale. But Lynn decided to vmte a sequel explaining how the situation presented in the prologue had come about. So, she wrote a short story where Methos told the tale to Mac and Joe. After I read it, I expressed a desire to know much more about what had happened to Methos in the past and I know that many of Lynn's other friends had the same wish! I don't think that Lynn realized when she undertook the task of expanding the story that it would be quite so daunting. I know that none of us realized at first that it would be such a long novel. When it began to reach novel proportions, Lynn asked me if I would be interested in editing and publishing the finished product and I was honored to say "yes." Lynn is to be commended for her hard work and her adherence to her vision.
Several artists contributed their own vision and hard work to the finished product. F. Cade worked long and hard to provide individualized chapter heading graphics. I hope you enjoy the results of her efforts. She also provided some stunning graphic artwork which greatly enhances the beauty of the zine. Maryaim Joi^ensen very kindly agreed to send some art and was willing to do more. Unfortunately, we had a deadline to meet for a convention but you will see more of Maryann's work in future Ashton Press zines. I owe her my thanks, as always, for her willingness to "draw on command" and for always coming through. Thanks, Maiyaim. Speaking of drawing on command... Leah Rosenthal produced our magnificent color cover on extremely short notice (Maryann was originally going to do a color cover for us) and I think she's captured the spirit of Lynn's story perfectly. I'd also like to thank her for the drawing of Methos and Ritavka, which was another case of me pointing and saying "draw this please.. .now"! C. P. Foster has contributed one Methos illustration to round out the zine. I wish you could see some of her original color work... and you probably will in upcoming publications. Thanks for joining Ashton Press, C. P.

Author's Notes
Reflections.
When I started this story, it was meant to be little more than a short story—a quick tale tossed out on a summer afternoon.
That tale turned out to be the prologue of this novel—a novel that took me to places I'd never been as a writer. Yeah, it's easy to look at all the statistical "records" I set with this novel. It's certainly the longest thing I've ever written—by nearly a hundred thousand words. It's also the quickest I've ever written a novel. Six months is a new record for me.
But more than that, this novel became a true journey for me. I went deeper, darker and more detailed than I ever had with any characters, plot or setting. I discovered places in my soul that I never knew existed; some of which frightened me, some of which gave me great strength.
In essence, then, this is a personal story. Hopefully, though, you will find something within this personal journey that will entertain you, or simply make you think.
Reflections.
It's made me reflect. And you don't make a journey like that without the support of a strong network. You don't turn out a work this lengthy without the help of many talented individuals.
On the personal front, I have to thank Liz first and foremost. Throughout all my wussiness and all my doubts, she was there with a supportive word and helpful advice. She more than anyone forced me to recognize the depth of the journey I was on and try to understand its importance to me.
Annie, on the other hand, played the consummate editor and friend, constantly keeping me on track and never letting me doubt that I could finish. As the depths overwhelmed me, she was there with support, concern and the no-nonsense attitude that convinced me I could finish this tome.
Others assisted on both sides of the equation. On my personal journey, Ruth, Mamee, Gill, Mir and far too many others to list by name offered their support, eyes, and cheerleading. The PWAS and ROG were also there for distraction and conversation when I needed it most. As always, my mother was there to listen to the hardships, even I never let her learn of the subject matter of this novel. (Some things mothers just shouldn't know about.)
The artists who provided their talents to this work also get my most sincere thanks. While I have not yet seen all the art as I write this, I am assured that you all have done lovely work. I have seen F. Cade's chapter headings and I want to thank her for taking the time to personally consider each chapter title and provide it with perfect graphic representation.
And to Leah....
What can I say? On a work this personal, every piece of artwork weaves itself into that tapestry and becomes part of the whole. I had expected that. I looked forward to seeing my words transformed.
Then I saw your cover.
You took an image that I captured with my camera, wove throughout this story, then turned it into a piece of art that touches me. The words "thank you" are not enough, but they are all I have.
Most importantly, I want to thank you, the reader, for taking the time to take this journey. Thank you for stopping to reflect with me. I hope this tale transports you to the world of Methos, Joe and Mac—then even further back to the world of Methos, Kronos, Jakata and Matim. And please let me know what you think. You can send a letter to the addresses within this zine, or otnail me at [email protected]. I welcome your comments.
And remember, it is only in reflection that we can see ourselves. Enjoy!
