It began as rec.arts.anime, and in the mid-90s to early 2000s saw several thousand posts a month. Steve Pearl was a/the moderator of rec.arts.anime.misc from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. He created the group's "list of frequently asked questions." In 1993, several additional Usenet communities were created, including:
- rec.arts.anime.stories (later rec.arts.anime.creative, RAAC) for fanfic
- [1] rec.arts.anime.info for posting announcements
- [2] rec.arts.anime.marketplace for merchandise
In March 1996, R.A.A. was so high-traffic that it was disbanded (though Usenet being what it is, many servers still used it, and there continued to be posts to it until 2004[1].) and split into several different groups:
- rec.arts.anime.misc (RAAM) for general fan discussions (the official replacement for RAA and still the most active group, averaging over a thousand posts a month in 2008[2])
- rec.arts.anime.fandom (RAAF) also for discussions, particularly of fanworks; most of the discussion about RAAC fanfic occurred here
- [3] rec.arts.anime.music for anime music
- [4] rec.arts.anime.games for games based on anime
- [5] rec.arts.anime.models for anime models and figurines
There were also many more specialized newsgroups, including groups for individual anime, such as listed on this 2004 Master List of Anime Related Newsgroups.
