A Patronus is a protective animal form conjured by the Patronus Charm in the Harry Potter universe. The form a Patronus takes is unique to the person who conjures it. Patronuses[note 1] are primarily used to repel Dementors but are also used by the Order of the Phoenix to deliver messages.

It is implied that one's Patronus reflects one's character traits—how this is differs from an Animagus form is the subject of some debate. One's Patronus can change to reflect a deep love for another person. Harry's Patronus takes the form of a stag, which is his father's Animagus form.

Pottermore featured a quiz that would determine a user's Patronus.

Notes

  1. ^ The plural form of the Latin word patronus (meaning protector or defender) is patroni; however, the plural of Patronus in Harry Potter canon is "Patronuses". The word is always capitalized in the books.
