Reactions and Reviews
In order to prevent crew-woman Janet Salton from being gang-rape by the natives, Kirk is forced to take her publicly. Despite an unpromising start, the landing party manage to figure out the local culture sufficiently to establish trade for a much-needed mineral and make their escape. Back on board, Salton finds herself surprisingly disturbed by his impersonal treatment. She also finds herself pregnant. In "Addendum," a few years later, Kirk finally makes his apologies and sees pictures of his daughter; in "PostScript" she has decided to leave the Fleet to raise her daughter and Kirk visits her and her child. [1]
'Paterfamilias': Reasonably well-done story of the difficulty in maintaing a friendly relationship that started out of forced intimacy, in this case between Kirk and one of his lieutenants. Included are addenda and postscript to the story, vignettes for people who have to know whether there ever was a happy ending. Nice not to have to wait, actually. [2]
"Paterfamilias" by Jelica Ranelle, illustrated by Joan Hank. Kirk and a female crewmember are forced to publicly copulate to save their lives with unexpected consequences. Illustrations depict male frontal nudity. [3]
"Paterfamilias" (Ranelle) is a titillating story in which Kirk’s landing party is being held captive by natives who force Kirk to publicly engage in sexual intercourse with a crewwoman in exchange for their freedom. Kirk does it, of course, as a means to an end--but what an end! Lt. Janet Salton gets pregnant.
In the sequel, "Addendum", there are a lot of uncomfortable feelings between Kirk and Janet, but eventually they reach a reconciliation.
A third story, "Post Script", has Kirk visiting his child, named Khirrahn. Janet is married now, but she and Kirk remain friendly.
Three enjoyable though improbable stories. [4]
