An Overnight Fandom is a fandom triggered by a current event that leads to spontaneous fannish reactions and/or commentary. These fandoms tend to be short-lived microfandoms, leaving little impact on fandom in general.
Overnight fandoms reacting to political events are often of a satiric nature.
Sometimes, an overnight fandom starts with a fan sharing a fic or an idea for funsies; in that case, it might turn into a trope.[1]
