Background
When two video games are released within a close window of time, the two fandoms often have a bitter rivalry over which game is superior, deserving to sell more units and win more awards (e.g. Super Metroid vs Donkey Kong Country, Battlefield 3 vs Modern Warfare 3, Ghost of Tsushima vs The Last of Us Part II).
In the case of blood-and-guts Doom Eternal and cutesy Animal Crossing: New Horizons, two games that couldn't possibly be more radically different, the fandoms instead decided that it would be more fun to enthusiastically support one another and mash their contrasts into something delightfully jarring. This fandom alliance has been most popularly embodied in content depicting a friendship between the series' respective mascots, Doomguy and Isabelle. Even the games' official Twitter accounts participated in the trend by making encouraging messages for one another.
Fanon and tropes
Fans often play up the subversion of expectations. The wrathful, killing-obsessed warrior Doomguy is depicted as mild-mannered, considerate, and appreciative of life's simple pleasures; meanwhile, the sweet and helpful cartoon dog Isabelle is depicted as carnage-loving and wrathful. Isabelle invites Doomguy for snack time and bug-catching, and shows the same enthusiasm when Doomguy invites her to slay demons with giant guns. At GameStop, Isabelle orders a copy of the M-rated Doom Eternal, while Doomguy orders a copy of the all-ages ACNH.
